If you haven’t yet invested in consistently creating high-quality content, you should, because if you’re trying to build any type of visibility and reputation on the internet, you need it now more than ever.
However, there are so many moving parts to the process that it can be a little overwhelming when trying to get started. So, being that we’ve been in content marketing and SEO in NY and NJ for years now, we thought we’d pass on a few tips we’ve picked up along the way.
Ask, and answer, the right questions.
When trying to jumpstart your content marketing, the first hurdle to get over is determining what kind of content, specifically, you should create that would be worth your while and help you most.
So, you and everyone else at your company need to start thinking about the questions that your audience is likely asking as well as the ones they’ve actually been asking most over the years pertaining to your company, products, services, etc. Then, take a good look at your site and how many answers to those questions can be found on it. Chances are, you’ll find plenty of room for additional content.
You can also have marketing people sit in on sales meetings, calls, etc., to listen for potential content topics and it’s worth mentioning that even if you reach outside your company for help, it’s still a good idea to participate in the process, whether you simply pass on ideas, keep an eye on the tone of the content to ensure it’s aligned with your brand’s, etc.

Start with the hard ones and write for them, not you.
Once you’ve compiled some questions and ideas for content, try prioritizing them to determine which are the most urgent and should, therefore, be addressed in your content marketing first.
From there, whether you’re guest posting on an authoritative site that’s relevant to your target audience—which can help a lot when starting out—or you’re developing content for your own site or channels, take it from us as longtime NY and NJ SEO experts who’ve been in content marketing for a while, it’s crucial that you create content for your audience’s benefit, not content for your own benefit that’s aimed at your audience.
It’s not just about the topics you explore in your content either, but also the tone you take on as well. Far too many businesses and marketers just making their foray into content marketing waste their time creating purely promotional content.
The only way to give yourself any chance of earning your audience’s respect and gaining some real credibility with them is to concern yourself instead with creating content around topics that will interest them in a language they’ll understand and appreciate.
Use social media to promote and don’t stop!
When just starting out in content marketing, it’s a good idea to do a little social media marketing via your employee’s social pages, if possible, to get content in front of more of the right eyeballs, especially if your business’ social profiles haven’t generated much of a following yet.
You should also consider creating content beyond just text-based, and if video production is at all a possibility, go for it. From there, believe it or not, the biggest issue with failed content isn’t the level of quality but a lack of consistency and/or an abrupt end to its creation as many businesses and marketers simply aren’t patient enough to see the fruits of their labor and stop creating content consistently or at all.
That results in a seemingly failed campaign when, in reality, things may have worked out just fine had they just kept at it. So, be patient. It takes time to start seeing results, but if you stick with the plan, when they come, they may surprise you, pleasantly.
