Redesigning a website is tricky business. After all, while it’s imperative to keep up with the constant state of evolution of internet marketing and search engine optimization, you also need to be careful.
People get accustomed to the way websites look and the most efficient ways to navigate them. You don’t want to change them so much that you frustrate return visitors and cause them to head elsewhere.
However, sometimes, it’s simply time for some adjusting. So, how do you know when you should redesign and when you should keep things the same?
Well, we’ve been doing website design in NJ / NY for a while now, so we know what some of the signs pointing to a redesign are, and which ones can be misleading.
Your website and brand mission are misaligned.
Sometimes, you’ll find that your website doesn’t align properly with your overall objectives or core values. Maybe you’ve changed them over time, or maybe it never did in the first place.
The point is, your website has the power to be your most valued asset in terms of establishing and expanding your identity and presence and supporting your values, so it must be designed accordingly.
The experience you provide on your website should reflect the experience people have when they actually interact with a member of your organization.
You need to make sure your website’s helping to achieve your defined goals and that it clearly illuminates your company’s expertise. If it’s not helping to support your specific cause, it’s a good time for a redesign.
Your audience has evolved.
Sometimes, businesses realize they should be targeting new buyer personas, or the preferences and behaviors of the ones they already are targeting change, and when that happens, you need to change with them.
You may need to adjust your content marketing or larger changes may be in order to address navigation issues that new users may be experiencing or, if members of your target audience start using other devices more, you may need to redesign your site to address that issue.
As far as redesigning to ensure your site can be easily accessed and navigated across multiple devices, as longtime NJ SEO experts, we recommend going with a responsive design, but for more on that, check out our previous post: Why It’s Time for a Responsive Design.
If you’re thinking about doing a redesign, make sure it’s warranted.
The bottom line is, you shouldn’t dive into a website redesign simply because it’s been a while or because one of the big bosses is itching for a change.
It’s a big investment, so you need to be sure it’s worth the time, effort, energy, and money.
