Google’s Gary Illyes recently revealed at SMX East that the next Penguin update will not only be coming soon but should also result in a real-time version of the algorithm, and that’s kind of a big deal.
We’ve been doing SEO in NY and NJ long enough to know that every single Google algorithm update is a big deal, but this one could have bigger consequences than most.
So, let’s take a look at what this news means for business owners, marketers, and SEO specialists and what you can do to prepare, or respond.
What does it mean?
Having a real-time algorithm will allow Google to process information and changes and respond to them immediately. Basically, as soon as you act, now, Google will be able to react.
Now, as always, there are pros and cons to the adjustment. If you’re penalized for some reason, you’ll be able to make the necessary adjustments and get back on track faster than ever, and that’s great.
However, it also means that you could end up getting penalized just as fast when you do make a mistake or try to dupe the system and those penalties could start piling up before you know it.
What can you do?
First off, once the update officially rolls out, keep a close eye out for any spikes in traffic, no matter which direction they’re heading.
If there’s a big dip right after the update’s announced, you’ve got work to do, and if, on the other hand, there’s a spike heading upward, you’re on the ball.
Then, review your site and look for any spam. Take it from us as NY / NJ SEO experts, you’ll want to remove any spammy links you come across as soon as possible.
A little history lesson…
Google first announced the algorithm update known as Penguin back in 2012 with the intention of hurting the rankings of websites employing black-hat tactics like link stuffing.
Sites that were running clean or made the necessary changes to move away from black-hat tactics remained where they were in the rankings or moved up whereas websites that ignored the warnings were susceptible to new penalties.
So, the upcoming real-time update falls in line with the search engine’s original objective, which was to be able to quickly and efficiently tell the difference between which sites are doing things correctly and which aren’t.
The bottom line… get ready for real-time.
No matter if you think the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa, the real-time update is coming. When, exactly, we’re not too sure, but it will come eventually.
So, as long as you’re doing things by the book and keeping your search engine optimization strategy on the level, all it means is that you’ll be able to recover from unexpected penalties in a jiffy.
If, on the other hand, you’re still making mistakes or trying to cheat your way up the rankings, Google’s going to find out, and they’re going to find out really fast.
