Google is putting its foot down when it comes to “revenge porn,” which is the name given to nude and explicit images usually shared by a disgruntled ex, without the consent of the subject, with the intention of humiliating a former partner or extorting the source. The victims are most commonly women.
As longtime NJ SEO experts, we’ve known this to be a serious problem for a while now, so when the search engine giant recently announced that it’d taken measures to allow users to protect themselves from this sort of revenge, truthfully, we were a little surprised that it took this long to address such a significant issue.
We’ve been in SEO in NJ / NY for years and we’ve been hearing the stories for a while now. Whether it’s an angry ex trying to humiliate a former partner or some kind of hacker who manages to steal nude and explicit content before trying to extort the source, it’s been happening for some time.
Apparently Google has heard the stories, too. They announced that these kinds of acts of revenge have essentially no business in search and only serve to humiliate other users and that, now, they’ll be treated like other removal requests, such as those for bank account numbers that end up in the search results.
So, in the coming weeks, a new online form will be available that users can use to request the removal of nude and explicit images, shared without their consent, from the search results.
The truth is, just because Google makes an adjustment, that doesn’t mean we can expect “revenge porn” to disappear entirely. However, it will undoubtably be a huge deterrent.
Think about it. While there are other places to find content, it’s gotten to the point where, if you can’t find it on Google, it barely exists.
On top of that, by Google taking a firm stance on the issue, future perpetrators will find it more difficult to exact their revenge, or, at the very least, it won’t be nearly as fruitful or worth their while.
The bottom line is, it’s about time that one of the major search engine players takes a stance on “revenge porn,” and you can expect the movement against this sleazy practice to expand and strengthen as time goes on.
