Sometimes, coming up with a topic for content is a piece of cake. Once in a while, everything just falls into place. The stars align and all is well in the universe.
More often, though, it’s a lot more difficult than that. We’ve touched on it in the past and for some basic guidelines, some tried-and-true methods, check out our recent blog: From Our SEO Experts to You: The Art of Blog Topic Inception.
Today, though, we’re going to dive in a little deeper and take a closer look at the things you can do to pull a rabbit out of a hat and present something a little more unique.
Yes, things like how to’s and reviews have a proven track record, but this is about finding an original and relevant topic. Some topics succeed simply because they don’t fit the mold.
Maintain an inquisitory state of mind.
When reading, watching, or listening to other pieces of content, whether you’re researching industry sources for your own concept development or you’re just browsing randomly, always question the content and all it professes to give you.
That doesn’t mean you should constantly look for little mistakes. It means you should look, instead, for the potential of additional content.
You or the NJ SEO expert you hire should ask yourselves questions like, what’s wrong with this content? What fails to connect? What’s missing? What’s misleading?
Essentially, you want to keep an eye out for the content the creator seems to have missed when crafting the piece. If you have questions, there’s your topic right there. Research and do whatever else it takes to answer those questions and then relay the message to your target audience.
It’s inevitable that something will be left out or inadequately explained or justified. Often, the author may simply be wrong. If you recognize that, then create content with the right information.
Additionally, you’d be surprised how many pieces of content, especially blog posts, are too short and barely graze the surface of a topic. This is when you can take the opportunity to dive in a little deeper.
What’s great about this is that it affords you with the opportunity to learn more about your field and increase your authority in your industry. The more you know, the more valuable content you can provide to your audience.
Create killer content combos.
One trick that SEO experts in NJ and elsewhere use to find a topic that has a better chance at feeling unique to the target audience: combine two or more previous content topics for a new species of content.
For instance, if two topics have some type of connection, or at least touch on similar areas and overlap in some way, you can craft content about these similarities and why they’re important.
The connection between the content pieces may change the entire meaning of each piece individually, or help to further understand or shed new light on them.
Similarly, this can even work with two pieces of content that are not alike. In these cases, the differences, the contrast between the two topics forms the new, hybrid-like topic.
You can take it even further and use two ideas that stand in direct opposition to one another. You can write about why that is and, whether you choose a side, justify both, or just help your audience further understand the contradiction, it’s another opportunity to present a unique piece of content.
Don’t just think outside the box, get out of it too.
It always helps to break the mold a little bit. That doesn’t just mean you should get out of the office and take a break every once in a while, which can do wonders by the way.
It could also mean taking a brief stroll around the office and starting some discussions with your coworkers. You’d be surprised how much this can help generate ideas. They can help expand your notion of what your target audience will find interesting, entertaining, or useful in some way.
In addition to that, other members of your organization aren’t the only outsiders you or the NJ SEO expert you hired may want to consult with. The same goes for customers and clients. What better way to find out what your target audience wants than by simply listening to them?
Comments, reviews, and feedback sections are often full of content topic ideas, right from the horse’s mouth. This is where people go to tell you how they feel, what they prefer, etc. So, take the time to listen because your next great content idea may be sitting there waiting for you.
Lastly, plan long-term and keep your eye out.
A content marketing strategy can be a great tool. Forming a long-term plan and preparing a schedule for when content should appear and what it should be about when it does, can be very helpful. For more on that, check out: How to Plan the Perfect Content Marketing Strategy.
The bottom line: Keep an eye out. When you’re reading, listening, or watching content, look for holes. Look for things you can expand on, correct, or put your own spin on.
And, of course, break the mold any way you can. Talk to outsiders to get your mind moving in different directions. And when you find a great topic, form a series around it.
Besides that, choosing a topic ripe for content is as much about being open to inspiration finding you as it is about scouring every possible place to discover it. Keep an open mind and even wider open eyes. Your next great topic may be right in front of you.
