If you haven’t realized it yet, it’s easier to improve your rankings in search for certain areas than it is to do it on a larger scale.
To some businesses, local search engine optimization is more important than it is to others, but it’s important to every business to some extent nonetheless.
However, as longtime NJ SEO experts, trust us, some businesses that are making an attempt to improve their local SEO are making some big mistakes.
Let’s go over what those mistakes are so that you can avoid them and ensure your local SEO plan is built to succeed.
1. They don’t have any location-specific customer reviews.
When it comes to targeting a specific location in search marketing, one of the best ways to forge a genuine connection with searchers from that location is to provide them with reviews by customers from that specific area.
Whether you’re targeting a certain geographical area or not, customer reviews help, but they’re especially helpful when you are because there are only so many ways to be geo-specific.
So, if you’re having trouble generating customer reviews, try asking, whether via email, over the phone, in person, etc. The point is, they’re an important part of local SEO, so you should do what you can to acquire them.
2. They don’t have a mobile or responsive website.
It’s important to remember that, nowadays, local SEO and mobile search go hand in hand. People use their smartphones to find local information.
So, perhaps the biggest mistake you can make now as far as local SEO is to fail to make for a quality mobile user experience through your website design, which means having a mobile version of your site or going responsive.
We’ve been doing website design in NJ and NY for a while now, and we recommend going responsive. For more on that, check our our post, Why It’s Time for a Responsive Design, but the point is, you can’t afford to forfeit all those mobile users because of a poor user experience.
3. They don’t have a Google+ Page.
At this point, many businesses and individuals have come to see less value in creating a Google+ page and, truthfully, if they’re not targeting a specific location, then they should probably just treat it like they would any other site in their social media marketing and only use it if it’s a good fit.
However, when it comes to local SEO, Google+ is still indispensable. It’s where Google gets the data for that section in the upper right corner in search results where you see a map and basic information.
And you can’t just create a page and walk away forever either. You need to think about keywords, a high-quality, captivating description along with high-quality images and, of course, you must make sure that your basic info is current and correct. On top of that, remember to encourage reviews on your Google+ page too.
There are plenty of other mistakes businesses are making when it comes to local SEO, but avoid these big ones, and you’ll give yourself a good shot at success.
